Internships and Fellowships in Computational Science and Engineering
Argonne National Laboratory
Argonne National Laboratory is one of the U.S. government's largest science and engineering research laboratories. Each year, Argonne helps to train nearly 1,000 college graduate students and postdoctoral researchers and offers numerous undergraduate internships where students work with researchers in areas such as applied mathematics, chemistry, climate modeling, computational biology, computer science, nanoscience, and physics. For more information, see
Educational Programs at Argonne. In addition, Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division offers a highly competitive summer program for graduate students where students develop innovative methods in numerical computing and computational mathematics.
DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF)
The Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) is a program funded by the Department of Energy, Office of Defense Programs and Office of Science to identify and provide support for some of the very best computational science graduate students in the nation. CSGF has trained scientists to meet the nation's workforce needs in DOE laboratories, private industry, and educational institutions.
Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab hosts a 12-week summer program for students majoring in Computer Science and related disciplines which provides students with the opportunity to gain relevant research experience while they are pursuing their degree. Participants will work on well-defined projects under the guidance of one or more members of Computing Sciences. Additional information on computational research at LBNL.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Internships in Terascale Simulation Technology (ITST) is designed to prepare a few advanced undergraduate and primarily graduate students for employment as computational scientists. This is done by providing hands-on experience using Massively-Parallel Processing (MPP) systems, mentoring from expert computational scientists, and giving specialized instruction in computational mathematics and scientific visualization techniques provided by a dedicated Livermore Computing training staff, special guests, prominent Institute for Terascale Simulation (ITS) scientists, and scholars. This instruction includes interdisciplinary (mathematics-engineering) approaches necessary to work with terascale parallel processing machines.
Los Alamos National Laboratory
The Los Alamos National Laboratory Summer Student program hires over 2000 undergraduate and graduate students each year to work with Laboratory scientists developing and applying the best science and technology to make the world a better and safer place. For more information about the general student programs, see the main Laboratory student employment web page. The Los Alamos Mathematical Modeling and Analysis group organizes a highly competitive active summer program where students collaborate with Laboratory Staff Members and Postdoctoral Fellows to do fundamental research.
Sandia National Laboratories
Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico hosts summer interns sponsored by the US Department of Energy/Defense Programs. Known as Laboratory Critical Skills Development Programs, the goal is to establish a pipeline of qualified candidates to meet critical skills needs for Sandia's Stockpile Stewardship mission and national security. Graduate and undergraduate opportunities are available. The Engineering Sciences Institute (ESI) collaborates with faculty at respected technical institutes, colleges, and universities and encourages students to pursue internships and graduate study. Co-op and summer sessions are offered. Visit http://www.sandia.gov/employment/special-prog/index.html for more details.
U.S. Department of Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science offers workforce development programs for students, teachers, and scientists. Programs include Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships which place students at DOE facilities, the Community College Institute which places community college students at laboratories doing research, and the Pre-Service Teacher program which places students who have decided to teach with scientists working on projects related to laboratory research programs.
Additionally, PhDs.org provides a list of summer internship opportunities for mathematics and science graduate students.
