SIAM names 34 Fellows for key contributions to applied mathematics and computational scienceMarch 31, 2010
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) recently conferred Fellows status on 34 noteworthy professionals who will be recognized in July during the 2010 SIAM Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The 2010 class of Fellows is the first nominated by the SIAM community. It includes a diverse group of men and women who have made significant contributions to the fields of applied mathematics and computational science. These individuals have, among other things, shown excellence in research, industrial work, educational activities, or other activities directly related to the goals of SIAM. By honoring them as Fellows, SIAM acknowledges them as leaders in their fields.
"We take great pride in the accomplishments of these 34 outstanding SIAM members," said SIAM President Douglas N. Arnold. "Men and women from four continents and numerous disciplines, they exemplify SIAM's vision of the central role mathematics plays in the advancement of science and technology. They have created mathematical models for complex phenomena ranging from combustion to swarming. They have designed algorithms that enabled the restoration of old movies and the design of new aircraft. They have developed mathematical tools for optimizing manufacturing processes, tracking epidemics, and quantifying the uncertainty in both. Along the way, they have developed elegant mathematics which strengthens the foundations on which future work will rely."
