Java has become a household word in the age of the World Wide Web. Behind all the press releases is a surprisingly capable general-purpose programming language and environment which is beginning to be applied to serious scientific applications. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Java in these contexts? This minisymposuim will focus on the use of the Java programming language for numerical and scientific computing. The speakers will assess the performance of Java, describe new libraries and applications, and provide an update on-going community efforts to improve the language and develop standards for numerical computing.
