Optimization in Engineering - Part I of III

Sponsored by SIAM Activity Group on Optimization

4:00 PM-6:00 PM
Rio Mar 2

For Parts II and III, see MS51 and MS59.

There has recently been considerable progress in developing computer simulation models for problems in structural and thermal mechanics, fluid dynamics and other physical systems. These models can be used to predict system responses to system inputs, and by integrating them with optimization, we can harness the potential for creating robust design and control strategies for various management problems. These applications have created a need for new optimization algorithms that can overcome the difficulties arising in simulation-based design and control problems. The speakers in this minisymposium will describe the challenges of optimization problems of interest to their organizations and present current optimization technologies.
