Panel Discussion: Mathematical Skills for the 21st Century Company: Where Will Mathematical Scientists be Found in Industry?
The idea of this panel is to give some insight into what mathematical skills various employers seek when considering to hire someone with a mathematical background. Through this panel and the interaction with the audience, the audience will gain understanding of the types of opportunities available to mathematical scientists in pursuing a non-academic career or possibly a career that may move back and forth from industry and academia. The panelist have been selected from various industries that hire mathematicians and use mathematics in their respective companies. The panelist will provide a brief overview of their company or the part of the company that they work in. This overview will include a description of the kind of mathematical questions/research that are done. In addition, the panelist will provide a brief description of the characteristics they or their employer would value in a person with a mathematical background they would employee. Further, through the discussions, the audience will gain some understanding of the trends for careers industry in the fast paced 21st Century company. This panel will hopefully point out tactics for uncovering career opportunities in an industrial setting for mathematical scientists and provide an opportunity for those in the audience to make some networking contacts.
