Vortex Flow Computations (Part I of II)

Vortex flows are flows in which the region containing vortical fluid is only a small portion of the total fluid volume. These flows can be computed efficiently by placing computational elements in regions of large activity. The goal of this minisymposium is to present current methods used for vortex flow simulations, with emphasis on the numerical difficulties that arise and how to resolve them. The speakers will discuss the implementation of boundary conditions for the full 2d and 3d Navier Stokes equations, fast algorithms required in 3d, the appearance of spurious vortices due to underresolution and mesh refinement, and difficulties with standard quadrature rules for axisymmetric interface motion.
