Waves in Heterogeneous Media

Sponsored by SIAM Activity Group on Geosciences The earth's crust exhibits heterogeneity on almost every scale, and this mechanical complexity has a large influence on the propagation of seismic waves. The speakers in this minisymposium will describe recent research on the effects of crack systems, random layering and multidimensional slowness distribution, and fine cyclic structure on the character of waves. Such effects include velocity changes and dispersion due to multiple scattering, and spectral properties of reflected and transmitted waves. Organizer: William W. Symes, Rice University
