Some Results and Some Open Questions in the Control of Distributed Systems

A general and very fuzzy conjecture is that it is somewhat "simple" to control a system where behavior is "turbulent" or "chaotic".

In this expository lecture, the speaker will present a few results that are along these lines, including results on the boundary controllability of 2D Euler equations, on the "generic" (in a sense to be explained in the lecture) approximate controllability of Stokes equations, and numerical results connected with the use of irregular (or chaotic) controls.

The speaker will discuss a number of problems and conjectures on related questions and the connection with industrial applications at Dassault Aviation.
