Welcome to the Second SIAM Conference on Sparse Matrices and to the Coeur d'Alene Resort on the north shore of beautiful Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho! Sparse and structured matrices arise in a large variety of applications. This conference will bring together mathematicians and scientists working in the field of sparse/structured matrix computations. The gathering will provide a venue for the exchange of fresh ideas, new results in research, and a discussion of future trends in sparse/structured matrices. You will see from the topics covered in the conference program that the organizers and program committee have made an extensive effort to achieve a broad focus for this conference.
As a community, we have experienced significant advancements since the first SIAM Conference on Sparse Matrices in 1989. It is now time to have another meeting to assess our achievements and to look to the challenges of future problems.
Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the plenary speakers and, most especially, to those presenting contributed lectures and posters. There would not be much of a conference without their work and enthusiasm. See you all on October 9.
