John S. Baras, University of Maryland, USA, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Sweden, and Technical University of Munich, Germany

Biography: B.S. in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, 1970; M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University 1971, 1973. Since 1973 with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Applied Mathematics Faculty, at the University of Maryland College Park. Since 2000 faculty member in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Since 2014 faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Founding Director of the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) from 1985 to 1991.  Since 1991, Founding Director of the Maryland Center for Hybrid Networks (HYNET). Since 2013, Guest Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden. Life Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the SIAM, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Received the 1980 George Axelby Prize from the IEEE Control Systems Society, the 2006 Leonard Abraham Prize from the IEEE Communications Society, the 2014 Tage Erlander Guest Professorship from the Swedish Research Council, and a three year (2014-2017) Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study of the Technical University of Munich, Germany. Professor Baras' research interests include automatic control, communication and computing systems and networks, and model-based systems engineering.

cannarsa Piermarco Cannarsa, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy
Biography: Cannarsa is currently a professor of mathematical analysis at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he served as chairman of the undergraduate, master, and Ph. D. programs. He coordinates the European Research Group on Control of Partial Differential Equations - GDRE CONEDP - between France and Italy. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica and of the Italian Mathematical Society (UMI).

After graduating at Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa, Cannarsa was an assistant professor at the Naval Academy of Livorno, a CNR-NATO research fellow at Brown University, Providence, and an associate professor at the University of Pisa. He visited numerous academic institutions all over the world including Institut Henri Poincaré and Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, where he held a six-month CARMIN position in the year 2014/15.

His recent research work concerns viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations, optimality conditions for deterministic control processes, and the analysis of diffusive systems. On these topics, he wrote more than one hundred articles and the book Semiconcave functions, Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and Optimal Control

 

fridman Emilia Fridman, Tel Aviv University, Israel
Biography: Emilia Fridman received the M.Sc. degree from Kuibyshev State University, USSR, in 1981 and the Ph.D. degree from Voronezh State University, USSR, in 1986, all in mathematics.  From 1986 to 1992 she was an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Kuibyshev Institute of Railway Engineers, USSR. Since 1993 she has been at Tel Aviv University, where she is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering-Systems.  She has held visiting positions at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics in Berlin (Germany),  INRIA in Rocquencourt (France), Ecole Centrale de Lille (France), Valenciennes University (France), Leicester University (UK),  Kent University (UK),  CINVESTAV (Mexico), Zhejiang University (China), St. Petersburg IPM (Russia), Melbourne University (Australia), Supelec (France), KTH (Sweden).

Her research interests include time-delay systems, networked control systems, distributed parameter systems, robust control, singular perturbations and nonlinear control.  She has published about 100 articles in international scientific journals. In 2014 she was Nominated as a Highly Cited Researcher by Thomson ISI. She is the author of the monograph “Introduction to Time-Delay Systems:Analysis and Control” (Birkhauser, 2014).  Currently she serves as Associate Editor in Automatica and SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.

 

soner Halil Mete Soner, ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland
Biography: Soner is currently a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH-Z) and also holds a senior chair at the Swiss Finance Institute.   His research is on nonlinear analysis with emphasis on optimal stochastic control, partial differential equations, stochastic processes and mathematical finance.

Prior to moving to Zurich, he has spent nine years in Istanbul, Turkey and nineteen years in the United States of America. During his tenure in Turkey, he held the Isik Inselbag Chair at Sabanci University for two years and was a member of the Mathematics Department at Koc University for seven years prior to that.  He has received his doctoral degree from the Division of Applied Mathematics of Brown University.  Later, he was a member of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon 1986 - 1998. In 1998, he became the Paul M. Wyhtes '55 Professor of Engineering and Finance at Princeton.

He has co-authored a book, with Wendell Fleming, on viscosity solutions and stochastic control; Controlled Markov Processes and Viscosity Solutions, and authored or co-authored several articles on nonlinear partial differential equations, viscosity solutions, stochastic optimal control and mathematical finance.  Since 2011, he has been the Executive Secretary of the Bachelier Finance Society and in 2014 he was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award.

 

tilbury Dawn Tilbury, University of Michigan, USA
Biography: Dawn M. Tilbury is currently the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering, University of Michigan.  She received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in 1989, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992 and 1994, respectively.  In 1995, she joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she is currently Professor, with a joint appointment as Professor of EECS. Her research interests include distributed control of mechanical systems with network communication, logic control of manufacturing systems, reliability of ground robotics, and dynamic systems modeling of physiological systems.  She was elected Fellow of the IEEE in 2008 and Fellow of the ASME in 2012, and is a Life Member of SWE.

 

zuazua Enrique Zuazua, Ikerbasque & BCAM, Basque Country, Spain
Biography: Enrique Zuazua, Eibar, Basque Country – Spain, 1961 (http://www.enzuazua.net) is a Disntiguished Research Professor at Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science in BCAM - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, that he founded in 2008 as Scientific Director. He is also Professor-in-leave of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), an honorary member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Sciences, Letters and Humanities, a Visiting Professor of the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Lorraine, in France and a Humboldt Research Awardee at the University of Erlangen in Germany.

He holds a degree in mathematics from the University of the Basque Country, and a dual PhD degree from the same university (1987) and from the "Université Pierre et Marie Curie" in Paris (1988).  In 1990 he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 2001 he moved to the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

He has been awarded the Euskadi (Basque Country) Prize for Science and Technology 2006 and the National Julio Rey Pastor Prize 2007 in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology, the Advanced Grant NUMERIWAVES of the ERC in 2010, and more recently the best article prize of Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré for the year 2008 (joint with Th. Duyckaerts and X. Zhang).

With over 200 articles published, his work has had an important impact (h-index = 33) and he was recognized as a “Highly Cited Researcher" by the ISI Institute (Thomson) in 2004, also he has supervised 23 postdoctoral researchers and over 25 PhD students. His fields of expertise in the area of Applied Mathematics cover topics related with Partial Differential Equations, Systems Control and Numerical Analysis. He is the editor-in-chief of “ESAIM: COCV" and member of the editorial committee of other Journals and of scientific committees of various centres and agencies.

Since September 2009 he runs, in cooperation with the journalist Xabier Lapitz a Radio Program at Onda Vasca on various topics related to Mathematics, Higher Education and Research. He is also the author of the columns "Matemanías" and "con-CIENCIA" at the basque dayly newspaper Deia and the weekly one Zazpika-Gara and a collaborator of the radio program “Faktoria” and the TV Program “Azpminarra”, both of them in basque language.
