The Numerical Solution of Large Scale Eigenvalue Problems

The problem of determining a few eigenpairs of a very large (generally sparse) matrix has occupied the attention of numerical analysts, scientists, and engineers, since at least the nineteen sixties. Great progress has been made, and we are now at a point where we can solve problems that would have been unthinkable thirty years ago. Nonetheless, there are still promising ideas and unsolved problems. This talk will survey the field and try to point out opportunities for further advancement.
