The second SIAM Activity Group on Optimization Prize will be presented to the authors of the most outstanding paper on a topic in optimization published in a peer-reviewed journal between January 1996 and December 1998. One of the authors will give a presentation based on the winning paper which contains significant research contributions to the field of optimization with direct and/or potential applications.
The winning paper is "Improved Approximation Algorithms for Maximum Cut and Satisfiability Problems Using Semidefinite Programming" co-authored by Michel X. Goemans, CORE, Belgium; and David P. Williamson, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. David P. Williamson will talk on "Semidefinite Programming for Combinatorial Optimization."
