Andrew Teel Receives First SIAG/CST PrizeSeptember 15, 1998
SIAG/CST program chair Suzanne Lenhart of the University of Tennessee, who also chaired the program committee for the Fourth SIAM Conference on Control and its Applications, presents a plaque to Andrew Teel, recipient of the first SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory Prize.
The SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory awarded the first-ever SIAG/CST Prize to Andrew Teel on May 8, 1998, at the Fourth SIAM Conference on Control and its Applications, which was held in Jacksonville, Florida, May 7-9.
Teel, an associate professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California at Santa Barbara, was cited by the prize committee for "his fundamental contributions to the theory of nonlinear control." The control synthesis method that he has developed accounts for system saturation without sacrificing local performance. Teel described this method, illustrated by several examples, in a presentation titled "Accounting for Saturation in Nonlinear Control Design" at the conference.
Teel received an AB degree in engineering science from Dartmouth College in 1987 and MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989 and 1992. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the École des Mines de Paris in Fontainebleau, France, until he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Minnesota in 1992 as an assistant professor. He has been a member of the faculty at UC Santa Barbara since 1997.
Teel, who received a Research Initiation Award in 1993 and a CAREERS Award in 1995 from the National Science Foundation, was named a McKnight Land-Grant Professor at Minnesota in 1996-97 and was also the recipient of the 1998 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Prize Paper Award.
The prize, which consists of a plaque and a certificate, recognizes outstanding research contributions to mathematical control or systems theory and will be awarded every three years, at conferences organized by SIAG/CST.
