Orientation Information for New Chapters

Congratulations on forming a new SIAM Student Chapter.  Below is information that will assist you in growing your new chapter into an active group and taking advantage of all that SIAM offers its chapters.

Free SIAM Memberships!

Student members of SIAM student chapters are eligible for free SIAM student memberships.
Please encourage students to join SIAM and remind chapter officers that, according to the rules of procedure, they are required to be SIAM members. We want them to begin to feel part of the larger applied and computational mathematics community. As SIAM members, students are eligible for a 30% discount on SIAM books; receive free subscriptions to SIAM News, SIAM Review, and Unwrapped; and have access to career information as well as cutting-edge research. If students apply for SIAM Student Travel Awards to attend SIAM conferences, their membership in SIAM might tip the balance in their favor if all other qualifications are equal among candidates under consideration.

There are three ways for students to get free SIAM membership:

  1. Students may join online and claim free membership by virtue of their association with the chapter. After completing the online application, students will receive email confirmation and a new member orientation packet in the mail.

  2. Download a membership application and have each student fill it out and return to SIAM. You can request copies of membership applications from Nancy Snell.

  3. The faculty advisor or chapter officer can send the list of student chapter members to Membership Coordinator Nancy Snell, including student name, mailing address, e-mail address, and whether each member is a graduate or undergraduate student. Each student is also eligible to join two SIAGs for free, so if you know if any of the students would like to join any particular SIAGs (SIAM Activity Groups), you can note that on the list as well. We will process the memberships and send email confirmations followed by new member orientation packets to any of the students who are new members of SIAM.

NOTE:

  1. Free student memberships are for one year and must be renewed annually. Graduate students are eligible for up to six years of free membership.
  2. Free student members receive SIAM Review only in electronic format and are not eligible to vote in SIAM elections. If students prefer to receive SIAM Review in print, as well as in electronic format, and they wish to be eligible to vote in SIAM elections, they can upgrade their membership for just $25 per year by joining online as a paying student or by contacting Customer Service at membership@siam.org.

Funding!

SIAM provides up to $500 per academic year for each student chapter to support guest speakers, refreshments for chapter meetings, and other activities.

To apply for funds, fill out and submit the “Request for Funding” form found on the SIAM website at www.siam.org/students/chapters/forms.php. Requests received by September 30 of the current academic year will be given priority consideration. New chapters may submit requests for funding up to March 15th of the current academic year.

Promoting Your Chapter!

SIAM will promote student chapters by posting information on the SIAM website and creating links back to chapter websites. Send chapter officers and web links to Nancy Snell for inclusion on the individual chapter web pages linked from the list of current chapters.

Chapter activities may be reported in SIAM News (SIAM's monthly newspaper), SIAM Unwrapped (member e-newsletter), or in SIAM Connect (online news). Send photos of your chapter activities to Membership Coordinator Nancy Snell and story ideas or photos to SIAM News Editor Gail Corbett.

Collaborating with other Chapters!

There are opportunities for collaborating and sharing ideas among the chapters from across the globe.
SIAM will provide partial support for your chapter to send a student representative to attend the 2013 SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, July 8-12, 2013, and to represent the chapter at Student Days and the SIAM Chapter Meeting with Leadership.

Communicating with other chapters

  1. You can keep in touch with other SIAM chapters and plan collaborations.
Electronic mailing lists for chapter faculty advisors (siam_chapter_advisors@siam.org) and student representatives (siam_chapter_reps@siam.org) facilitate the exchange of ideas. When new chapters are approved, the faculty advisor will be added to the list serve for chapter faculty advisors. Student representatives, and all student chapter officers, will be added to the list serve for student chapter leadership.

  2. SIAM has a new Student Blog for its active and vibrant student community.  SIAM Student Chapter representatives can update other chapters on events and activities they are organizing in addition to sharing and seeking ideas on fundraising and public outreach. Students can also share their views and perspectives on applied mathematics and computational science research and education, and start a discussion on any relevant topic of their choosing. To contribute to the blog, go to the following link and post articles directly by using the login credentials below. (Blog post will be reviewed and posted by SIAM staff within a day or two.)
