Here is a campus map for UBC.
The fifty G2S3 participants will stay at the Marine Drive Residence on the campus of the University of British Columbia, from July 3 to July 16, 2011. Each participant will stay in a private bedroom with single bed, telephone and clock radio, in a four-bedroom shared apartment.
Directions to the Marine Drive Residence: google maps. Marine Drive is in square E2 on the campus map (link above). The address is 2205 Lower Mall, Vancouver, BC Canada V6T 1Z4. Here is more practical info about the Marine Drive Residence.
The course schedule is here. On the first day (Monday July 4), please come to the lecture room at 8:00am.
The lectures will be held in room GEOG 100 at C3 on the campus map. During the first morning coffee break you will receive a voucher to purchase your own lunches on campus. The Student Union building (at C4 on the map) has a variety of options for lunch. A meeting room that we will use all day for coffee breaks and to bring back your lunch is WMAX 216 at C2 on the map (PIMS's building). The computer labs will be held in room LSK 310 at C3 on the map. The dinners will be held in the Gallery Lounge in the Student Union Building.
The participants are responsible for purchasing their own plane tickets. A taxi from the Vancouver airport (YVR) to the UBC campus costs about $40 (Canadian dollars). Public transportation is also available from the airport to UBC: take the skytrain Canada Line from the airport to Broadway Station, then transfer to the 99 UBC B-Line from there. Adult bus fares must be paid in cash with exact change (else change is not returned). Books of 10 bus tickets can be purchased at UBC for the price of $19.00.
The main bus stop on the UBC campus is called "North bus loop", at D5 on the map. It is a 10-minute walk to the Marine Drive Residence from this bus stop. An alternative to walking is the C20 shuttle which takes you part of the way from North Bus Loop to the Marine Drive Residence. More info on the campus shuttles is here. Again, change is not returned on the shuttle fare.
You will find thorough information in the Visitor guide handed out by PIMS.
The Gene Golub SIAM Summer School is a satellite event of ICIAM 2011, the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, taking place on July 18-22, 2011, in Vancouver. This major conference is held every four years in lieu of the SIAM Annual Meeting. Many minisymposia will address the topic of Waves and Imaging at ICIAM, including an extended "Industry Focus Area" on imaging and inverse problems co-organized by William Symes, Felix Herrmann, Timo Betcke, and Laurent Demanet. All participants of the summer school are strongly encouraged to extend their stay in Vancouver for ICIAM 2011.
We also encourage participation in the Waves 2011 conference (July 25-29, Simon Fraser University) for a full month of fun in Vancouver! The deadline for submitting an abstract for a contributed talk or poster to Waves 2011 is January 15, 2011.
The 2011 edition of the G2S3 follows in the footsteps of the very successful ISSNLA summer school, which took place in Italy in July 2010. SIAM lists the previous editions of the G2S3 here.
