Fellowship & Research Opportunities

For Graduate Students

MSRI Climate Change Summer School, July 14th – August 1st, 2008
This 3 week summer school combines a research conference, interdisciplinary brainstorming sessions and a graduate student workshop. Graduate students are invited to apply for funding to attend.  More information and application instructions can be found at http://www.msri.org/calendar/sgw/WorkshopInfo/453/show_sgw.  Review of applications will begin March 17, 2008.

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF)
CSFG provides support for some of the very best computational science graduate students in the nation.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Graduate Fellowships
The DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program offers a 12-month fellowship for graduate students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission.

The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
Awards fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering.

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
NDSEG supports approximately 8,000 graduate students each year.

SIAM/AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows Program
To strengthen the connection between science and the media, a graduate student in applied mathematics and computational science is selected to spend 10 weeks during the summer at a radio station, television station, newspaper or magazine.

University-Industry Cooperative Research Programs in the Mathematical Sciences (UICRP)
It is in the national interest to provide more opportunities for mathematical scientists to have the experience of conducting research in an industrial environment and for industrial scientists to return periodically to academia, to acquire new knowledge, and to move it efficiently into technology. Through the Division of Mathematical Sciences, this program provides support for university-industry postdoctoral research fellowships, university-industry senior research fellowships, industry-based graduate research assistantships, and industry-based graduate cooperative fellowships.

For Undergraduate Students

2008 AMALTHEA REU Program in Machine Learning
AMALTHEA is a 10-week, summer research experience for undergraduate students funded by the National Science Foundation. Moreover, it is a joint effort of two collaborating universities in Central Florida, namely Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne and University of Central Florida in Orlando.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration
NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program offers undergraduates across the United States mentored research experiences at the NASA centers during summer and fall sessions.

NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program (REU)
Research experiences for undergraduates provide non-traditional opportunities in original research and collaborative problem solving that afford insight into how mathematicians work. The site features information for students interested in identifying research opportunities and for faculty interested in obtaining support for undergraduate research students through either an REU Supplement or REU Site proposal from the National Science Foundation.

U.S. Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships
This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Many of the participants in the program have decided on a career in science and engineering because of the nature of the experience. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs.

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA
Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS). The goal of RIPS is to expose undergraduate students to an industrial research project that requires the application of mathematical principles to solve real-world problems.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Undergraduate Scholarships
The DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program offers two-year scholarships for undergraduate students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission.

U.S. Department of Energy Community College Institute
This program places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any of several different locations (see Choosing a Lab). Because of the comprehensive nature of this program many of the participants have felt it has had an enormous influence on their careers. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informational sessions.

The Winston Churchill Foundation
The Foundation's Scholarship Program offers the opportunity to spend one year of study and research at Churchill College Cambridge to U.S. citizens enrolled at American colleges and universities. The newest of the colleges at the University of Cambridge, Churchill College is focused on the sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Churchill Scholars show exceptional talent, outstanding academic achievement, and promise of making a contribution both to the life of Churchill College and to their chosen field of study. Most Churchill Scholars receive the degree of Masters of Philosophy and then return to graduate school for doctoral or doctoral degrees in the United States. The Foundation pays all tuition and fees and provides a generous allowance for room, board, travel, and other expenses.
