Ben Fusaro received his Ph.D. in partial differential equations from the University of Maryland in 1965. He went on to get tenure at the University of South Florida, Queens College (NC), and Salisbury State University (MD). He retired from Salisbury in 1995 and has been a Visiting Professor at Florida State University since then. Dr. Fusaro spent a year in Taiwan on a Fulbright and has been a visitor at the University of Oklahoma and the USMA at West Point. He has spent most of his career trying to bring applied mathematics into the curriculum. He created the Mathematical Contest in Modeling and directed it for seven years. His belief is that the environmental applications---necessarily interdisciplinary in nature---are crucial to mathematics and society. His professional activities include long-term service on the SIAM Education Committee, SIAM representative to the MAA-NCTM Task Force on Math Competitions, Governor and Chair of the MD-DC-VA Section of the MAA, and Chair of the MAA Environmental Mathematics Committee.
