Guidelines for Establishing Reciprocity

The purpose of reciprocity is to further SIAM’s goals of advancing the disciplines it serves (applied mathematics and computational science) and providing media for the exchange of information in those fields. The primary way SIAM achieves these goals is through our membership and the products and services we create for those members. SIAM is an international organization with 1/3 of our members working outside the U.S. While SIAM serves members directly in many countries through regular membership and through some regional sections, we recognize that other national/regional organizations in applied mathematics and computational science play a valuable role in advancing the discipline and representing interests of members in national and local issues. SIAM participates in international umbrella organizations, like ICIAM, and encourages the development of other organizations that have goals similar to those of SIAM. One of the means of encouraging the development of other groups is to link membership of other societies with SIAM through reciprocity.

What is Reciprocity?

At the basic level, reciprocity is a mutual agreement between SIAM and another society that supports the goals of SIAM. Components of the agreement typically include:

Mutual discount off dues: members of one society may join the other and receive a discount off the standard dues rate.
Mutual promotion: An exchange of information and clear communications to members (membership lists, ads in newsletters, or something similar) in order to promote reciprocity.

Reciprocal members typically have full privileges of membership. It is desirable to have other activities that can be shared among reciprocal societies as well. It is hoped that reciprocity will lead to opportunities for future collaboration and cooperation between societies.

Reciprocity is defined by a standard memorandum of agreement executed by both societies.
