Industry At-a-Glance Calendar for Talks & Events

The SIAM Industry Committee has combed through the conference program to highlight talks and events that may be of interest to attendees who work in Business, Industry, and Government. View the calendar here.

Featured Minisymposia

Selected by the CSE19 Organizing Committee, these minisymposia provide overview presentations on fundamental advances in fields related to the conference themes. Each featured minisymposium will begin with a broadly accessible introduction to the topic, followed by presentations about important advances in the area. These sessions are a great opportunity for conference attendees to broaden their horizons and learn about important advances in areas with which they may not be fully familiar.

SIAM CSE19 - Broader Engagement Program

Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and Sustainable Horizons Institute are pleased to announce a Broader Engagement (BE) and mentoring program at the 2019 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering  (CSE19). Due to its success of the SIAM CSE15 BE and the SIAM CSE17 BE programs, another program will be a part of CSE19.

View the program schedule here.

The goals of the program are to bring a diverse group of students, faculty, and professional to the conference, engage them in conference activities and the community, and engage the CSE community in learning about and supporting diversity and inclusion.

BE participants receive travel funding, access to the full CSE19 technical program and other BE activities including: workshops, guided affinity groups, mentor-protégé program, opportunities to present research, and other community events.

For more information about applying for funding or volunteering visit this website.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are recruiting volunteers for the following roles: Mentors, Guides, and Volunteers for career or professional development topics.

Please visit SIAM CSE19 BE Volunteer Opportunities for additional information regarding volunteer opportunities.  To register as a volunteer, visit SIAM CSE19 BE Volunteer Registration.

Mentors

A mentor is someone more knowledgeable and experience than the protégé who guides the protégé, informally transfers knowledge, social capital, and often provides psychosocial support.  Mentoring relationships are a learning and developmental partnership and typically both the mentor and the protégé derive a variety of benefits.  At SIAM CSE17 the BE program will provide structured, semi-structured, and unstructured mentor-protégé activities. Some of the activities will include mentor/protégé pairings and some will not.  Mentors who have been matched with a specific protégé will be asked to meet with the protégé at least once during the conference and will be encouraged to continue communication beyond the conference. There is irrefutable and growing evidence that mentoring promotes academic and career success, especially among those traditionally underrepresented in CSE. Our vision for the Mentor Protégé program is to influence career and professional development long after the conference concludes.

Guides

Guides lead small affinity groups in activities at the conference with the goal of improving the learning for the group members.  An example of a guided activity might include: meeting with the group prior to a mini-symposium to discuss what to expect, attending the mini-symposium with the group, then meeting with the group afterwards to demystify, further discuss, and answer any questions. Another example might include attending a plenary session together, then assigning “homework” such as a writing a short paper, presenting a synopsis, or writing a blog; and then meet with the group to go over the homework.  Guided events should involve activities directly related to CSE17 conference sessions and should aim to improve learning.

Mentor/Protégé Benefits

Protégés will benefit from the opportunity to connect with seasoned professionals, get advice, and explore their questions about academic, career, and professional pathways

Mentors will benefit from the opportunity to give back to the community, influence others, and discover and share their own techniques and aspirations

Mentor Protégé Matching Process and Responsibilities

Mentors and Protégés will be matched utilizing demographic and other information about scientific, professional, and personal interests. Mentor-Protégé pair introductions will occur electronically prior to the conference and in-person during the conference.

Mentors and Protégé responsibilities include: participation in an introduction event and a workshop. Optional additional activities will be suggested, such as mentors’ agenda review and session recommendations for their protégés to consider, joint attendance, one-on-one meetings, and continued contact after the conference.

Sponsorship and Donations

Sponsorship opportunities and donations are welcome.
