Mathematical Modeling of Moving Interfaces Arising in Biomechanics

4:00 PM-6:00 PM
Rio Mar 5

Moving interfaces appear in many biomechanical applications, such as vocal fold oscillation during phonation, wall motion as blood flows through arteries, undulatory motion of a swimming creature, etc. A common feature is that the motion comes from the interaction of an elastic structure in contact with fluid flow. The speakers will present show analytical and computational methods in fluids and dynamical systems for modeling in two distinguished areas: (1) flow induced vocal fold oscillation and hysteresis due to the coupling of compressible airflow and finite mass elastic folds; (2) motion of flexible elastic membranes immersed in incompressible fluids. Both are intended for general audience.
