Welcome to the Fifth SIAM Conference on Optimization. We hope that you will find this to be a stimulating and enjoyable meeting and that, in spite of the crowded program, you will find some time to relax, meet with friends, and enjoy being in Victoria.
You will see from the topics covered that the organizing committee made an explicit effort to achieve a broad focus for this meeting. Optimization connects and mingles with many parts of mathematics, computation, and applications, and we encourage all of you to attend at least one session on a topic that is ``new and different'' for you.
This meeting has involved a tremendous amount of planning and organization. Our organizing committee has been actively involved in all details of the meeting, and the two of us are very grateful to them. We give special personal thanks to the SIAM staff; their help has been essential in making this meeting happen.
Finally and most importantly, we thank you, the contributors, for all your work and enthusiasm. The success of this meeting clearly indicates that we work in an exciting, useful, and extremely active area.
Andrew R. Conn and Margaret H. Wright
