Optimization under Uncertainty

10:30 AM-12:30 PM
Center City 1

Making robust decision in the midst of parameter uncertainties is fundamental in all design, manufacturing, planning, and management applications. Uncertainties can arise in operational, environmental, and market parameters (e.g., ambient temperature, customer demand), erroneous model representations (model simplifications and assumptions), and model parameters and data (e.g. reaction constants, physical properties, errors in measurements). Furthermore, a decision maker has to deal with discrete decisions, like whether to choose a particular option or not, and also with decisions involving continuous space such as what operating temperature should be chosen in a plant. Development of a systematic and efficient methods for rapid and reliable optimization under uncertainties is of much practical value. The speakers in this session will present the development of innovative and powerful approaches for solving problems of decision making under uncertainty applied to large scale design, manufacturing, planning, and management related problems.
