About the Conference

The life sciences have become increasingly quantitative as new technologies facilitate collection and analysis of vast amounts of data ranging from complete genomic sequences of organisms to satellite imagery of forest landscapes on continental scales. As a consequence, mathematics and computational science have become crucial technologies for the study of complex models of biological processes.

The SIAM Activity Group on Life Sciences brings together researchers who seek to develop and apply mathematical and computational methods in all areas of the life sciences. This conference of the activity group will provide a cross-disciplinary forum for catalyzing mathematical research relevant to the life sciences. It will facilitate rapid diffusion of new mathematical and computational methods in the life sciences, and may stimulate more researchers to work in these important areas. Mathematicians, life scientists, computational biologists, bioengineers and others interested in mathematical and computational analysis of biological systems are encouraged to attend.

Conference Themes

The themes of the 2004 conference will include, but are not limited to:

  • Ecology, Environmental and Evolutionary Biology
  • Genomics
  • Imaging
  • Neuroscience
  • Physiology and Immunology
  • Structural Biology
  • Modeling Diseases
  • Biomathematics in Industry

Hotel Reservations

SIAM's 2004 Annual Meeting and the 2004 SIAM Conference on the Life Sciences will be held in the new addition to the Oregon Convention Center in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

Attendees are encouraged to use the Doubletree Hotel (or if you are a student, the Holiday Inn.) The Doubletree will serve as the SIAM headquarters hotel.

We have contracted rooms for conference participants at the Doubletree Hotel at the rate of $139.00 per night plus tax. (http://www.doubletree.com ). This rate will be offered for three days before and two days after the conference to accommodate those wishing to spend extra time in the area.

Rooms have also been contracted for students at the Holiday Inn Portland (Online Reservations) at the rate of $100 per night plus tax. Students must show student identification at check-in to receive this special rate.

Room reservations are the responsibility of each participant and should be made by calling the hotels directly or using the hyperlinks for online reservations and requesting the group rate for SIAM 2004. The cut-off date for making hotel reservations is Monday, June 21, 2004. Accommodations after that date will be made on a space available basis. We urge you to make your reservations early.

Visit here for directions to the convention center, surrounding hotels and venues.

Due to the growing need for more concurrent breakout sessions, 14 for the Annual Meeting and 8 for the Life Sciences Conference, for the first time, SIAM has opted to use a Conference Center. The additional space is needed for such events and sessions as Diversity Day, Student Day, Teachers Day, Award Luncheons, etc.
