Multiscale Analysis of Dislocations

Plastic behaviour of crystals is related to the motion (and its inhibition) of individual line defects, the dislocations. While there has been considerable progress in the computational modelling of the motion of individual dislocations and their local interaction, the large number of dislocations in a given specimen requires a multiscale approach to understand their collective behavior.

The scope of the presentation is to give an overview of the variational models for dislocations that can be obtained through an asymptotic analysis of systems of discrete dislocations. The anisotropic models that arise from this analysis are intended to explain complex phenomena like dislocations walls or networks.
