Mystery Numerical AnalystsMarch 13, 2007
Many readers enjoyed the photos from the archives established at the University of Manchester by Nick Higham and Sven Hammarling ("Image Archive for Numerical Analysis," SIAM News, January/February 2007, page 1). As to the identities of the group enjoying a picnic thirty years ago, during Gatlinburg VII, in Asilomar, California, we received some interesting suggestions. The photo, reprinted here in black and white, shows two SIAM presidents, Wallace Givens (far left) and Alston Householder (second from left), with Beresford Parlett (back to camera), Fritz Bauer, and William Kahan. The Gatlinburg Symposium was later renamed the Householder Symposium.
