While on leave from his faculty position at Indiana University, Professor Thompson has worked on problems in epidemiology while visiting Georgia Tech and CDC in Atlanta, GA, and on problems in environmental science while visiting General Motors Technical Center in Troy, MI. He served as Chairman of the CUPM Committee on Applied Mathematics, on the SIAM Education Committee, and on the MCM Advisory Board. He has written research and expository articles and lectured in workshops and conferences on mathematical problems arising in biology and medicine.
