The purpose of this minisymposium is to present recent progress in the computational modeling of flow and deformation processes in porous media exihibiting heterogeneities in several length scales. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of high performance computing in the solution of these problems. The computational modeling of multiscale deformation processes is derived by homogenization theory in conjunction with finite element methods. Multiple scale computations are performed in order to capture the coupled hydro-mechanical interaction between scales. Flow and nonlinear transport processes in fractally heterogeneous media will be considered through a Monte Carlo approach. The computational algorithms are based upon Eulerian-Lagrangian time discretization procedures.
