George B. Dantzig Prize

The prize honors George B. Dantzig for his contributions to operations research and computer science. The prize is awarded every three years to one or more individuals for original research which by its originality, breadth, and depth is having a major impact on the field of mathematical optimization. Nominations are collected via the Mathematical Optimization Society (MOS) website.

Prize Description

The George B. Dantzig Prize is awarded ever three years to one or more individuals for original research which by its originality, breadth, and depth is having a major impact on the field of mathematical optimization. MOS administers the prize and it is awarded jointly by MOS and SIAM.


Eligibility Criteria

The George B. Dantzig Prize may be awarded to any member of the scientific community who meets the general guideline of the prize description. The contribution(s) for which the award is made must be publicly available and may belong to any aspect of mathematical optimization in its broadest sense.

  • Nominator’s letter of recommendation for candidate
  • CV of the candidate

Winner Announcement

Congratulations go to Andrzej Ruszczynski of Rutgers University and to Alexander Shapiro of Georgia Institute of Technology who were awarded the George B. Dantzig Prize at the 23rd International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP 2018) held July 1-6 in Bordeaux, France.

About the Award


About the George B. Dantzig Prize


The George B. Dantzig Prize includes a monetary award and a certificate containing the citation. The recipient will be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending the award ceremony.

Award Date

The George B. Dantzig Prize will next be awarded in July 2018 at the SIAM Annual Meeting.


Award Presentation

The award is presented at the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP), except every third award where it is presented at the SIAM Annual Meeting. The Chair of MOS or the SIAM President will announce the award, read the citation, and present the certificate to the recipient. The announcement of the award will appear in SIAM News, the SIAM website, and appropriate electronic media.


Award Fund

The initial funds for this award are contributed by the students, friends, colleagues, and family of George B. Dantzig.
