About the Award

About the George B. Dantzig Prize

The George B. Dantzig Prize includes a monetary award and a certificate containing the citation. The recipient will be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending the award ceremony.

Award Date

The George B. Dantzig Prize will next be awarded at the 2024 International Symposium on Mathematical Programming.

Award Presentation

The award is presented at the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP), except every third award where it is presented at the SIAM Annual Meeting. The Chair of MOS or the SIAM President will announce the award, read the citation, and present the certificate to the recipient. The announcement of the award will appear in SIAM News, the SIAM website, and appropriate electronic media.

Award Fund

The initial funds for this award are contributed by the students, friends, colleagues, and family of George B. Dantzig.

Prize History

Prize History

Citation

The George B. Dantzig Prize is awarded to Hedy Attouch for his fundamental contributions to modern variational analysis and nonsmooth optimization, including new notions of variational convergence, the introduction of novel topologies for the study of quantitative stability of variational systems, and their application in algorithm design and analysis, dynamical systems and partial differential equations.

Citation

The George B. Dantzig Prize is awarded to Michel Goemans for his outstanding contributions to the field of combinatorial optimization; most notably, the initiation of new research directions, introduction of novel and deep techniques, and ingenious use of sampling, rounding, and geometric ideas to significantly advance several fields, including the pioneering use of semi-definite programming for the design of approximation algorithms.

Citation

Dimitri Bertsekas has been a leading force in optimization over many years. He has made highly original and fundamental contributions to dynamic programming, analysis and development of augmented Lagrangian methods, auction and relaxation methods for linear network optimization, deterministic and stochastic techniques in systems and control, first-order methods, parallel and distributed optimization, and several other areas. He has also been involved in applications of optimization to energy production systems and data network communications. Through scholarly papers, research monographs, and textbooks, his work has influenced several generations of optimization researchers, and continues to have a major impact on the field.

Margaret H. Wright (Chair)
John Birge
Laurence Wolsey
Stephen J. Wright

Citation

Jorge Nocedal has made fundamental contributions to the theory of nonlinear optimization methods, has developed new algorithms that expand the range of efficiently solvable optimization models, and has created widely distributed software that enables new developments in numerous application areas.
