I. E. Block Community Lecture

Named in honor of I. E. Block, a co-founder and the first managing director of SIAM, this lecture is open to the public at the SIAM Annual Meeting. It is intended to encourage public appreciation of applied mathematics and computational science by reaching out to the local community.

Prize Description

The I. E. Block Community Lecture is given annually at the SIAM Annual Meeting and is named in honor of the co-founder and former managing director of SIAM, I. Edward Block, to recognize his contributions to the growth of SIAM and to perpetuate his vision.

The I. E. Block Community Lecture is open to the public and is intended to encourage public appreciation of the excitement and vitality of science. The lectures are intended to reach out as broadly as possible to students, teachers, and members of the local community, as well as to SIAM members, researchers, and practitioners in fields related to applied and computational mathematics.


Eligibility Criteria

The lectureship may be awarded to any member of the scientific community who is known for engaging nontechnical as well as technical audiences in the role that applied mathematics plays in solving topical, real world problems. Candidates are determined and the recipient is selected by the Block Community Lecture Committee.

About the Award


About the I. E. Block Community Lecture


The lecturer will receive an honorarium of $1,500 and a small gift commemorating the lecture. SIAM will reimburse the recipient for reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending the award ceremony and giving the lecture.

Award Date

The I. E. Block Community Lecture will next be given at the 2024 SIAM Annual Meeting.


Award Presentation

The SIAM President will introduce the lecturer at the meeting. The lecture is free to the public and widely promoted in local media. The announcement of the award will appear in SIAM News, the SIAM website, and appropriate electronic media.
