What We Do

SIAM fosters the development of applied mathematical and computational methodologies needed in various application areas. Applied mathematics, in partnership with computational science, is essential in solving many real-world problems. Through publications, research and community, the mission of SIAM is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology.

About SIAM

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of 14,500+ individual members. Almost 500 academic, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting organizations, government, and military organizations worldwide are institutional members. SIAM was incorporated in 1952 as a nonprofit organization to convey useful mathematical knowledge to other professionals who could implement mathematical theory for practical, industrial, or scientific use. Since then, SIAM’s goals have remained the same:

  • To advance the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science, and society.
  • To promote research that will lead to effective new mathematical and computational methods and techniques for science, engineering, industry, and society.
  • To provide media for the exchange of information and ideas among mathematicians, engineers, and scientists.

Our Areas of Focus

Since its inception in 1953, SIAM’s journal program has produced quality, peer-reviewed journals that are respected and highly-cited throughout the applied mathematics and computational science community. Read More

For nearly six decades, SIAM has published research monographs and textbooks written by renowned experts, addressing fundamental subjects and emerging topics of vital interest in academia, industry, and government. Read More

SIAM Undergraduate Research Online (SIURO)

SIAM Undergraduate Research Online (SIURO), an open-access web-based publication for undergraduates, has published reviewed undergraduate manuscripts since 2008. Subscription and access are free and open to the public. Read More

We are a community of 14,500+ computational mathematicians, computer scientists, numerical analysts, engineers, statisticians, physicists, educators, and students from more than 100 countries. Become a member and gain access to resources, cutting-edge research, invaluable networks, and more. Read More

SIAM Activity Groups

SIAM Activity Groups provide a focused forum for SIAM members interested in exploring one of the areas of applied mathematics, computational science, or applications. Get Connected

Student Chapters

SIAM Student Chapters promote applied mathematics and computational science to young mathematicians and scientists. Read More

SIAM Sections

SIAM encourages the formation of sections comprised of members residing in a defined geographic region. Sections organize lectures, meetings, and other activities that serve their members. Read More

SIAM conferences focus on timely topics in applied and computational mathematics and applications. These conferences provide a place for members to exchange ideas and expand their network of colleagues. Read More

Programs and Resources

SIAM offers many applied mathematics and computational science related resources for students, teachers, and professionals, such as guidelines, reports, and videos. We also organize a robust list of programs, like the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge for high school juniors and seniors and the Gene Golub SIAM Summer School, a graduate-level program that offers courses in applied mathematics, computational science, and institutional mathematics. Our extensive prize program annually recognizes outstanding applied mathematicians and computational scientists. Read More

The SIAM Committee on Science Policy has a continued presence in Washington, D.C., where we work with policymakers and actively advocate for science funding while also keeping our membership aware and knowledgeable on relevant policy issues. We are proud to write white papers in collaboration with other organizations, and to be highly involved in the national discussion about STEM education. Read More

At SIAM, we are proud to collaborate with other organizations and are highly-involved in enhancing and promoting STEM education. We believe in strengthening and enhancing our partnerships in order to further the innovations of STEM nationally and globally. Read More
