Letter from SIAM's President

August 2012

Dear Fellow SIAM Member:

Once again, I call on you to cast your vote!

In 2012, the SIAM membership will choose three members to serve on the SIAM Board of Trustees and four members to serve on the SIAM Council. (We elect the President, Secretary, and Vice-President at Large only in odd-numbered years.)

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the function of each group. The Council concerns itself with the scientific policy of SIAM, whereas the Board is concerned with financial management. Of course, there is a strong interplay between both groups, so it is important to recognize that we need persons with a wide variety of experience to serve. I hope that you will take the time to look over the ballot materials and cast your vote.

The nominating committee has assembled an excellent slate of candidates, and we, as members, should be grateful to the candidates who have agreed to stand for election and to commit their time to working for the profession through SIAM, knowing that only half can be elected. As always, we have allowed space for write-in votes.

We value your advice and suggestions for future nominees. Please feel free to make such nominations and note them in the spaces provided at the end of the ballot; they are carefully tabulated and considered before each election.  You can also suggest nominees at any time by clicking on "Recommendations" at http://www.siam.org/about/board.php.

The deadline for voting is November 1, 2012. If you need any help with this process, please contact the SIAM office (election@siam.org).

Thanks for your support of SIAM.

Nick Trefethen
