Citation

The 2018 W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize is awarded to Volker Mehrmann for his fundamental contributions to the broad area of differential-algebraic equations, their control and optimization, and their practical applications. Volker Mehrmann is a specialist in numerics and theory related in particular to the vast area of differential-algebraic equations and their control and optimization. He has been linked to important efforts to study numerical pencils and design performant algorithms for the approximation of nonlinear eigenvalue problems. He has been part of the very important SLICOT project and also of other projects leading to important toolboxes in MATLAB, addressing issues related to differential-algebraic problems and control systems theory. His impact and influence on a very large community is spectacular. Coming from the field of algebra, he has evolved towards the study of differential-algebraic equations, being one of the main founders of the corresponding theory, and also towards the search for efficient and important algorithms linked to the control of linear systems, matrix pencils, etc. Together with a large group of students, post-docs, and collaborators, he has interacted strongly with industry, being able to solve concrete problems posed mainly by German and European industry.
